I'm hoping to plant a Whitethorn hedge at the back of my house. It is north facing and would like to get some advice on planting .
(1) What is the best time to Plant
(2) How far apart should I plant
(3) What other trees would you advise to add into the hedge
(4) Are there any books that you would recommend or course to attend
I would appreciate any advice you could give |

See here How to plant a hedge in Ireland.

All spacings listed here Hedging plants in Ireland (size, spacing, flowers and fruit)
Crataegus monogyna (hawthorn, whitethorn or quickthorn) about a third of the way down the page.

To act as trees or hedging plants? Loads of choices. What do you like or wish to plant, tell us and we can advise. _________________ How to post pics on the forum.

It's getting very late for planting Pat; they're in leaf now. You might just get away with it if you plant them immediately. I planted mine very simply: just made holes with a crowbar, dropped in the quicks and filled the holes up with sand. They all grew, and made a thick, high hedge in a very few years. I planted two rows, 18" between the plants, the two rows 9" apart and the plants staggered so that the plants were (in effect) 9" apart. That was ten years ago, and I laid that hedge this year - it was over 15 feet high. |

I am with Sean on this one Pat, always best to receive and plant when dormant, you can get awat with it but it puts more stress on the plant. If you do keep them well watered.... _________________ The Secret Garden Centre
