Hi,I am just wondering if anyone has any experience with propogating silver birch? Have read one or two articles online that say it is very difficult. Thanks. jjashar99

It depends on what you want to propagate? If it's just ordinary silver birch, Btula pendula or one of the other species, you can get seed and grow from that. If however you want one of the more ornamental varieties like 'Jaquemontii' then you will have to bud it onto a silver birch rootstock.

i grew some silver birch from seed a year or two back. however, while theye were still small seedlings, the bed i was using to grow them in was used as a toilet by some cats, so that was the end of that.

You will give yourself a real chance of success if you give your seeds a cold water treatment before attempting germination jashar99. GPI wrote a good piece on it a while back .
