We have a ditch running the length of our site by the road. It is a country road and as it is narrow vehicles often pull onto the grass margin of it to pass safely.
My husband wants to knock it and put up a wall or a timber fence as it gets overgrown easily.
I want to keep it as it is shelter and it is a natural boundary as it is, why waste money putting up wall.
I would like to plant the outside of the ditch with something that would creep along it, adding more colour and character to it, as the grass does get unsightly.
Is this possible?
How do I go about it and any recommendations for what I could grow on it?
Thanks

consider killing off the grass with roundup to give you a blank canvas,
how about trees by the road side, they will add color and wind protection, and add to the area and not just your roadside.....
Fushcias perhaps mixed in or Acer palmatums... roses by the roadside etc
I am in a very similar position, however having planted aroun the boundaries first , I am now finally arriving at the front of the site, and the roadside.
my plan goes a little like this for next autumn... kill off the grass to expose the bare soil, remove weeds etc, then plant in , items that are already growing down the back, to ive akind of sample of the garden on the roadside.
sort of plants i have in mind, are beech, (purple and green) acers, acer palmatum, fuschia, roses, berberis, hollies all mixed and matched for color. |
