Hi,
My name is Rosaleen and I'm a new member to Irish Gardners. I am the proud owner of a new polytunnel and would like some advice on layout, plant placement etc. I am not a very experienced gardner but am not a total beginner either. All or any advice/guidance will be gratefully accepted.
Looking forward to some reaction. |

Hi Roseleen.
Welcome to Irish Gardeners.
Good to hear you got your hands on a poly tunnel.
Have a look at this topic for some information on the subject of growing under glass or plastic....... http://www.gardenplansireland.com/forum/about103.html
Hopefully the polytunnel is oriented to face east/west in order to capture the greatest amount of sunshine during the winter months.
This also helps if the prevailing wind blows principally from the south, if your tunnel door opens to the east you will avoid shocking your plants with cold air every time you enter.
Plants in the polytunnel are completely at your mercy when it comes to water.
It is a good idea to set up a water butt or two to supply you with life preserving rain water.
Good luck with your tunnel, there's loads of gardeners interested in them this year from what suppliers are telling me. _________________ Benefited from irishgardeners.com? Then link to us or tell others.

Enjoy your polytunnel. We got ours a year ago and its been the most wonderful investment, already we have saved the cost of the tunnel against the organic veg we would normally buy in the market.
Crop placement - To avoid shading of smaller plants put the taller ones at the western and northen edges of the tunnel.
Crop rotation : It doesn't matter so much what you plant where the first year, but keep a little sketch, or a video clip on your camera, of what you grow where in your tunnel each year, then the following season you can glance back and decide what you should grow where next time.
Its worth getting a good book on gardening eg Gardening Under Plastic, or Four Season Harvest _________________ Living the good life on our rural Irish smallholding. Follow the learning curve on our interactive blogsite at www.sallygardens.typepad.com |

Hi Sinewave
Did you manage to source one near Galway? Searched myself but ended up having to order from the UK. |

Hi all,
I have just bought a 6'6 wide x 15' polytunnel on ebay for only €96. There are a lot of them on ebay currently and it costs €40 to have it delivered to Ireland. The tunnel has vent panels, fly screens, 2 doors etc. |

Wow! That's a pretty amazing price Lily. Will you let me know how it is when you build it? Might get a second one myself and that would be a BIG saving.
Actually, could you PM me a link to where you got them?
Cheers! |

Hi,
I tried to PM you but I must have placed a topic in 5 forums. Go into ebay.ie and key in Polytunnels in search. All the current polytunnels up for auction will show up. Go in to it now as there are about 4 which are about to close soon. If you want to send me ure email address I can email you the link. |

Hi lilylarkin
Just wondering if you received your polytunnel yet and if you are happy with it.
I want to buy one myself and that price seems very good.
I have often found the quality of items bought on ebay to be quite poor. If you are happy with it, I'd be interested to find out who th ebay seller was.
Thanks
Martin |

The one I got from firsttunnels is up, minus being covdered (my delay, nothing to do with the product).
I't is very well anchored with anchor plates, and standing up well to some Galway gales. So all in all would recommend them. |

We have also received and put up a First Tunnel poly for training purposes. Have to say great prices and service and very easy to get shipped over.
They currently have 10% off until the 10th August 09 and if you are vat registered here makes it even cheaper. _________________ The Secret Garden Centre
