| I noticed over the last couple of years that garden centres and DIY shops tend to sell the same bulbs - daffs, lillies, tulips, etc. Can anyone recommend an online shop that sells more unusual bulbs. I am not sure what I am looking for, but something different. I had a look at the Bakker site and as mentioned on another post - the colours are way out there man!. Are they reputable? Any other recommendations? |

| How about Alliums? Homebase have a selection on offer this week. Here's a really cool pic of Allium giganteum, also loads of other bulbs if you click on the fall index: |

I've just received a packet of anemone and agapanthus seeds from California. Delivery took 3 weeks. I recall my mother buying all her heritage seeds from Dominion Seed House for her vegetable garden, and collecting her own seeds for the following year. So, I thought I'd give it a try. Anemone's are much easier to grow from corms, if the squirrels don't get them, or from root cuttings. The flower profusely for up to 2 months and are a great display in the fall. I highly recommend them. Also, if you want to do mail order, there's Japanese maple varieties which are seeded now, kept in the fridge for 3 mos, then planted into mini pots. If there are no other local distributors from online websites in South Kerry ( I didn't get as much variety) then here are a few links for you to try. At least you get a picture of something you might not see much of in your local Superval.

|

Thanks for the direct link to Dutch growers and for reminding me to take special care of a Epimedium 'Sasaki' which I bought as a plant for my woodland shade garden. Lucky I kept the tag and saw that it flowers so beautifully. However, since it was bought in August, after sitting abused for the full season in a pot, then we had a dryspell, it just languished. I must give it special treatment with humus and tend it carefully. I'll report back on whether this is a hardy species or not.
Speaking of hardy, gloxinia are a good investment, though their flowering time is shortlived 1-2 weeks. They do spread and take up a lot of space, but mid summer, you don't even know where they went. A good spring flower and easy to care for.
Lastly, the spring anemone are wonderful for flowering - 2-3 weeks and not given to attracting rodents. Maybe people could also suggest which of the bulbs are deer favorites. |
