just wondering what other people find themselves reading of an evening; what recommendations people have.

i can recommend this book; easy to read, with useful advice, and a fun read even if you never put any of the information to use:
http://www.amazon.com/No-Nettles-Required-Reassuring-Gardening/dp/1905811144/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1234272710&sr=8-1

more a theory than a practice book, this is excellent, and an interesting peek into how research is done:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Seed-Secret-Life-Plants/dp/074758561X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1234273233&sr=1-1

not quite a gardening book, but a related topic:
http://www.amazon.com/Out-Woods-Armchair-Guide-Trees/dp/1904977839/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1234272892&sr=1-1

and this is heading for an all time favourite:
http://www.amazon.com/Wildwood-Journey-Through-Roger-Deakin/dp/1416593624/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1234272783&sr=1-1

I couldn't agree more about the Roger Deakin book,I read it recently, and was so sad when I came to the end of it......he was an amazing man, a unique character.

I have also really enjoyed two books by Ken Thompson: a small paperback called "No Nettles Required; The truth about Wildlife Gardening"
READ it....it will open your eyes about the life teeming in our gardens, and will give you even greater respect for nature. Also great for lazy gardeners, as you learn that less interference is usually good for wildlife!!!

And for anyone who needs a little help with compost making, no better handbook than Ken Thompson's "Compost"
Easy to read, lots of photos and illustrations.

*coughs gently and gestures vaguely but politely at the first link he posted*

it *is* a great book, though.

another one to add on the general line of ecology and biodiversity is this, by the granddaddy of ecology:
http://www.amazon.com/Future-Life-Edward-O-Wilson/dp/0679768114/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1234369246&sr=1-7

it's as close to essential as a book can get.

I'm sorry knievel, I noticed the Deakin book first and would have to admit I didn't read the other links as carefully.....maybe because there were no authors' names in the other links, they just didn't catch my eye in the same way
In the circumstances I think you could have done a lot more than cough gently too ! You are a true (gardening) gentleman, as I would expect on this website!

more of an ecology and landscape (and local history) book than a gardening book, but i'm really enjoying tim robinson's [i]connemara (listening to the wind) at the moment:
