Wooden Spheres for Garden

Hi All,

Does anybody know where I can get some wooden spheres for ornamental purposes in the garden?

Preferably in the Dublin/Kildare/Wicklow area.

what size? I think that they maybe difficult to find if you want large sizes.

Hi there,

The size would be about 20 to 30 cm diameter.

I had looked up the Dublin Guild of wood turners The guys who had websites looked very fancy and probably out of my price range (works of art though).

I was hoping I could find someone maybe doing it part-time/ as a hobby who may not be as expensive.

Have you considered stone or stainless steel spheres? They are available in Ireland.

Another idea. Get some plastic kiddies balls of the size you want. Cut a neat hole in each about an inch in diameter. Make up some runny cement and fill each ball. Leave for week. Cut off the plastic entirely and then paint the concrete spheres with creasote to give a timbery effect? Creasote will burn plants it touches while it is wet but if allowed to dry totally it is totally safe in the vicinity of plants. It also gives a nice healthy odour.

Good idea, but why creasote? And isn't it banned now.

For creasote read "creacote". I am not in the business of propping up a nanny state or a nanny-state mentality. I am an old-fashioned gardener and I hoped I was helping gardeners with minds of their own. I wanted to demonstrate lateral thinking and give a cheap lookalike ball that looked wooden. If they want to knit a wood-brown balaclava for each concrete ball that is ok with me too. Oh! and no offence to be taken Janalee. I know your heart is in the right place cause I've read every one of your posts. lol :roll:

. If you want to paint a sphere any ball shape will suffice if you can get one big enough. Terra cotta and glazed ceramic spheres are widely available but generrally limited by size. Natural stone spheres in Rainbow sandstone spheres are often confused for wooden spheres bbut are not so prone to weathering.
