Does anyone know any good crab apple receipes.? I've got a tree brimming with fruit and should really use them or leave them to the birds?

Not a recipe as such Yorky, but you could fill a vase or bowl with crabapples and pinecones for a great-smelling autumn table centerpiece. Also leave some on the tree for the birds.

The only thing I ever used crab apples for, years ago, was crab-apple jelly. It is a bit of a hassle to make as you have to strain it to make a clear jelly, but is very tasty. Is that what you had in mind? Try looking for recipes through google maybe?
Oh......and leave some for the birds of course!

If they are 'real' crabs, uniform size about same or slightly less than a golfball, you can make an excellent apple wine from them. Its labour intensive but gives a good return. I used to make about 8 bottles from basically 1 stone of crabs to 7lbs sugar and it was drinkable from Hallowe'een to Christmas. It makes like chablis if you get it together.

The reason for my asking are they real is that ornamental apples provide fruits about the size of large grapes. Them you put in a big bowl as Janalee suggested above and enjoy the bouquet. Even the birds don't like them. Just wondering could you make paint-stripper from the juice?

Thanks for the replies everyone. The jelly ws going to be too time consuming so I mixed the apples with some wild blackberries and made a crumble - delicious!
