In answer to Tagwex, public voting competition is fun but the winner cannot be deemed 'good', or 'bad' for that matter. The winner of Strictly Come Dancing can't be said to be the best dancer, nor the Rose of Tralee the most beautiful Irish girl - and I won't even mention Eurovision where politics is a factor. No, I stick to my original point that any trophy awarded by judges is meaningless, including tonight's Oscars. Was John Wayne anything other than John Wayne, whether in military uniform or on horseback with a Stetson? No, the parts were cast for him, yet he was described as a 'great actor

Scored? Yes. Measured? Yes. Diving, X-Factor, Synchronised Swimming? No.

Rose of Tralee is a character assessment competition not beauty.

My point is that a public vote can be based on tens of thousands of votes so they can't all be wrong. If a competition is decided by a small number of judges then the public are dependent on the 'experts' making the right decision.

There has to be a difference.

When I see an 18 stone 'Rose', I'll believe you but, as with soaps like Coronation Street, popularity doesn't necessarily equate to quality. Someone gave us a DVD of 'Avatar' a few Christmases back. Supposed to have been awarded gongs galore but we stopped it half way through as we couldn't put up with it any more.

Avatar won awards in best achievement in Cinematography, Visual Effects and in Art Direction. Granted that these wouldn't necessarily make the storyline any better or more watchable.

With regard to the R of T, the judging criteria is largely based on the lines from the song itself and that the contestants sort of follow that as a guideline.

I know we are veering alarmingly off topic (but I do like a good natter) When the subject of soaps comes up I like to tell folks that the last time I saw anything of Coronation Street, Hilda Ogden still had a 'muriel' on her wall - that normally shuts them up! Laughing

I grew up in a terraced house. Mum would always say 'we don't need to watch Coronation Street, we can just look out the window'. Very Happy

Yes, Sue, the whole ethos of entertainment USED to be a means of cheering oneself up with a glimpse of more glamorous lifestyles, of seeing the goodies beating the baddies, or of winning a war - relevant in the 40s and 50s - but these days we seem to love wallowing in other people's grot on the grounds that it's 'true to life'.

A friend of mine runs his own gardening/landscape business. When I see him he loves to chat about the business and there are many times he pours out his woes to me because he knows I understand.
He says he often gets people complaining about his charges but they forget he has to pay wages, taxes, insurance(s), fuel, vehicle maintenance etc ... before he makes a penny! The cowboys don't bother with all of that. So think twice before you get 'some bloke' in to do anything!

Oh, my goodness! She died in 1983. Shows you when I last watched Coronation Street.
