Blew up the photo. The stones appear to have religious connotations to them. My guess is some sort of a seal imprint into wax maybe. The implement appears to have two stones that almost touch each other when closed so my first thought of squeezing butter into shape is a non runner as the gap just isn't there.

fair play lads it is for making the marks on Eucharistic bread for the celebration of mass. It is a very heavy item.

Did they say what breed the horses were? They look like Haflingers - didn't know there were any in Ireland.
