Hi,
We moved into a house where the Patio sits on a soft gravel bed and is not grouted. Instead, there are/were stones in between the slabs. I have since removed the stones with the intention of either replacing the patio slabs and grouting or just grouting the existing slabs.
The slabs are sitting on a bed of compacted hardcore which has another bed of "soft gravel" - see pics.
Initially i was going to remove the soft gravel and put in more hardcore but now i am thinking of just using a wacker plate/compactor on the soft gravel and then relaying the patio slabs on a cement base etc
Any opnions appreciated - more so about wacking the soft gravel and then laying a cement base on top for the slabs - will the base hold for the future etc?
Please see pics, thanks
Conor

Would you consider planting in the joints?

actually yes, i was considering mixing grass seed with topsoil and compost, still somewhat unsure if the grass would hold up. I hear irish moss would be good but it is a south facing patio etc and of course will it look well etc etc.
what do you think?

Look at thyme or camomile grass as an option. Others here could advise you far better than I. I am a veg not a flowers man!
