Hi Margo, I think I'm a day ahead of you in the cold stakes!
Mind you, I did manage to drag myself into the greenhouse (where some hyacinths in bloom started me sneezing again ) and finally got around to sowing the broad bean seeds I put to soak three days ago. Fingers crossed they should be alright.
Time for another mug of Tay. _________________ Be humble, for you are made of earth

First day of spring today. Time to get the gardening hobby into top gear. Came home from work this evening and went straight from the car down the garden and tidied up a few things for almost an hour in readiness for my tractor man who should be coming at the weekend weather permitting. All this and my dinner was ready on the table but I wanted to make use of the daylight. Already know what I am doing tomorrow night. Greenhouse will be the weekend project, it has to be finished and ready for planting on Sunday. _________________ “It’s my field. It’s my child. I nursed it. I nourished it. I saw to its every want. Yep, first day of Spring .... and snow is on it's way .... sounds about right.
My raspberry canes arrived today. They are tucked up in a pot of compost 'till the weather improves. _________________ Be humble, for you are made of earth

Bought approx 100kg of potato seed this morning. Golden Wonder, British Queens, Kerrs Pinks and Rooster. Don't think I will be hungry for the next year or so. _________________ “It’s my field. Now you just have to plant them!
Had another great day in the garden. Managed to get a lot of 'Spring cleaning' done and got the land drain laid out in the ditch, ready for the stone.
While I was working around the veg beds I heard a tap tapping and traced it to one of our bird boxes. It was on one of the trees that has to come down. Hoping for the best, I rushed to get ladders and my screwdriver. I waited for birdy (a blue tit) to leave, shot up the ladder, unscrewed the box, took it over to another tree and snuggled it into some ivy. Another screw in place, and back down the ladder. Seconds later birdy came back and I swear he did a double-take, 'wha? I'm sure this was on another tree!'
The camera box is up and running too. Dave has just ordered a wireless camera for it as the wired one was damaged when the pine tree fell, the sound is a bit dodgy.
Off out for lunch tomorrow. Think I might get some seeds planted in the afternoon. _________________ Be humble, for you are made of earth

All this talk of vegetable seeds, spuds etc is reminding me that my raised beds are a sorry looking sight. But I will get around to cleaning and tidying them soon. In previous years I've been disappointed through planting too early, in some cases. Meanwhile, the multicoloured chard which has stood all winter is capeable of providing some leaves for the table once more, I'm happy to say.
The rest of the garden is gradually emerging from the mess of old dead stalks and foliage and is looking pretty good, with lots in flower and that crab apple has had its pruning - just as the leaves are starting to break. |

Hey Sue, what was the end result of your neighbour using tarmac as filling? _________________ “It’s my field. It’s my child. I nursed it. I nourished it. I saw to its every want. I dug the rocks out of it with my bare hands and I made a living thing of it!”

Hey James/Verge. Should this thread be moved to the overall discussion section? _________________ “It’s my field. It’s my child. I nursed it. I nourished it. I saw to its every want. I dug the rocks out of it with my bare hands and I made a living thing of it!”

tagwex wrote: | Hey Sue, what was the end result of your neighbour using tarmac as filling? | It's still sitting there in a sorry heap! Had a word with neighbour last week. He asked me what I thought about 'that stuff'. I told him!! He said 'yeh, I should have told him not to bring any more after the first load.'
He is such a nice, mild-mannered chap, he wouldn't say boo to a goose. I cant be cross with him. Dave said he would happily call the guy and tell him to collect his cxxp!
Neighbour says he'll sort through the stuff before he levels it - it's only the first lot that has the tarmac, the rest is broken flags, wood and general rubble. What he intends to do with it, I don't know. _________________ Be humble, for you are made of earth

I spent a pleasant couple of hours finishing off the weeding of my herb bed and then mulching it with stuff from Envirogrind. Its directly opposite the kitchen window so i like it to be tidy. |

After a lovely lunch at Creevy, I spent the afternoon in the greenhouse. I sorted out some dahlias and scented geraniums and threw out some of the 'last chance saloon' plants. The sunset was SPECTACULAR. The deepest shade of red I have ever seen! Shame my camera isn't up to the job. _________________ Be humble, for you are made of earth
