I don't know how many of us can receive BBC Radio 4 but Gardeners World can be quite good. They get questions from the audience and the panel provides answers.
I recall on one programme a chap went through a long list of things he'd done to his soil such as Double digging, adding sand, adding compost, using several types of fertiliser and he then asked what he should do next. The reply from one of the panel members was 'I should plant something in it now.' _________________ A novice gardener on newly cultivated, stoney ground. |

Blowin - that reminds me of a story I heard once about an American tourist enquiring of a gardener (I think it was at Hampton Court) 'how do you get the lawns looking so good?' As the tourist took notes the gardener told him about the raking and rolling, how high to set the mower blades, spiking and top-dressing - the tourist was scribbling it all down and when the gardener stopped talking, he said 'and then what?' The gardener replied 'well you just keep doing the same for about, oooh, 400 years.' _________________ Be humble, for you are made of earth

Only the Yanks, Sue? There was the famous quote from a 'blue rinse' American woman who was in a party with a guide going round Windsor Castle. Every so often the guide had to stop her talk while a jet took off from Heathrow and drowned her out and, after about the third time, theAmerican said 'Hey! Why'd they build it so close to Heathrow?' _________________ A novice gardener on newly cultivated, stoney ground. |

Or there's the story about the old Irish fella visiting his son in Florida. The son took his dad on a tour of his golf club. They stopped at one particular building and the son said 'and this is the original clubhouse (or words to that effect) it's over 80 years old.' His dad replied 'Jaysus, I've golf shoes older'n that!' _________________ Be humble, for you are made of earth
