Blowin - a friend had a greenhouse with those plastic sheets. He got it because he thought that they would be safer than glass. The first strong wind that came along ripped the door off it's runners and blew out 3 of the panels. We put them back for him and they blew out again.
He gave up and sent for a glass pack. They sent a whole new greenhouse! So he gave us the frame and the old plastic and we made a mini greenhouse out of it. The panels still blow out so we have braced them with canes to stop them flexing. Just a thought. _________________ Be humble, for you are made of earth

Hi, Sue! Valid points and anyone thinking of putting up a structure will need to evaluate their own situation, but most of us will have a prevailing wind where the worst of the weather comes from. Ours is SW so I'd put my door at the east end. If a branch of the many hawthorns around was to break off and hit a tunnel, it could rip the polythene. For me the very shape of the normal tunnel contradicts all the base principles of erecting an improvement on nature.
However, as recorded on other posts, I'm anti-tunnel and anti-raised beds, so, as long as David, in this case, knows his options, he must make his own decision and I'd wish him well with it. _________________ A novice gardener on newly cultivated, stoney ground. |

Do you see the search option at the top of the page? Write polytunnel in there and it will lead you to a minefield of previous discussions on same. There will be any amount of information, good and bad, in there that you can use for your own situation. _________________ “It’s my field. It’s my child. I nursed it. I nourished it. I have neither greenhouse nor tunnel but if i was contemplating getting either i would talk to local gardeners who have them and seek their advice on local conditions. |
