Came across this lad sitting on top of a roadside ditch during the week and he didn't seem too fussed about moving. So I turned around and went back to him to take the photo out of the car window. He was still there, so I let the window down, my terrier is now going doolally to get out after him and the bird just stays there. Note the short tail on what was actually quite a large bird. Not one from this year anyway.

I met a hawk standing in the middle of the road the other day. Wouldn't move so I drove around him slowly. He didn't seem to be hurt as he then walked around a puddle. I reversed and looked at him but he didn't seem fazed so eventually I drove off.

Your pheasant is presumably traumatised by shock - hence his reason for not flying off. A cock bird of that size would have had a tail feather so must have nearly been caught by a predator of some kind which pulled it out.

Hmmmm, most people are traumatised after meeting me.
