Hi,

We recently moved into a house that is on the beach. At the moment there is a 3 ft wire fence between us and the neighbours. I was wondering could any recommend a good hedge that grows in very sandy soil, that would give screening from the neighbours. Something that wouldn/t be too monsterous or too much work. Ideally I'd love something that flowers at some stage and have a nice smell!

Any help would be much appreciated.

Try this plant, I think it suits most of your needs.




Rosa rugosa 'Roseraie de L’Hay'
This shrub rose is an upright, bushy shrub with thorny stems and bright-green, wrinkled foliage.
In summer and autumn, it bears clusters of richly scented, velvety, deep crimson flowers. It is good for use as a Hedging/Screen and copes with an exposed aspect.
Rosa rugosa 'Roseraie de L’Hay' is deciduous (sheds and renews leaves annually), but it creates such a thicket that screening is still present.

Ultimate height is 1.5mtrs, with a similar spread.
Time to achieve this approx 3 to 5 years.

Plant in moist but free-draining or free-draining soil in a sunny position.
Avoid planting in sites that have previously been used for growing roses.
It tolerates most soil types including clay, sandy, chalky and loamy.
It requires a moist but well-drained soil.
Soil pH tolerated are Acid, Alkaline, Neutral.

Light required is full Sun

thanks a million for that help, .Am just back off holidays so hadn't got a chance to check. the garden is a disaster at the moment and its quite large so at least I have somewhere to start now with those ideas!
