Think Greengage meant Sequoia sempervirens - coast(al) redwood?
As for Metasequoia glyptostroboides (no wonder it has another name), I have two books that call it water larch or water fir. The International Book of Trees by Hugh Johnson says, '... Water larch, Dawn redwood. C China Zone 5 ..... Slower in chalk soils. Water loving. 50' in 20 years.
Readers Digest Book of Trees and Shrubs says, 'Until 1941 the dawn redwood or water fir was known to scientists only from it's fossilised remains....
Hillier's says it likes moist, but well drained soil. I couldn't live without my books!
