Another name for it is Water Larch - I wonder if it is to do with it being deciduous like the larch?
Did cross my mind it was a REDwood, but I thought that was a bit obvious, dur! Should have gone with the gut feeling and not tried to be clever - and wrong!

Sue never ever heard it called Water larch.
Looked on www ...nothing there either.
It certainly wouldn't be found in wet areas.
