my spring onions have bolted on me and i am wondering if they are still ok to eat. My Mother said they arent but they seem alright to me. im waiting for some to die so i can grow the bulb like I did last year and they were miniature onions then but this year seems to be different for some reason or other... i grew them in a new area which to be honest isnt the best place but they are doing alright.

Our onions are bolting a lot as well, I think the quick change in temperature may have had something to do with it.

I don't know about spring onions, but I think the issue with onions in general is that they don't keep once they've bolted.

They are still ok to eat but must be eaten first as they don't keep as Jacqcat pointed out. They will have a bit of a stalk growing through the centre of the bulb which you can eat but most people bin.
The onions will commonly bolt due to growing changes, too much/little water, cold spells after warm spells. Red onions are the worst for bolting I've seen, were yours red Loncey.
for future referance heat treated onion sets are reported to not bolt as easily.

no my onions arent red. i bought them as little onions and planted them up(shallots i think?) and now some are bolting. i checked in my veg book and i have to pick them soon. the weather isnt helping what with it being hot one day and blowing a gale the next.
