Sounds like black mould from honeydew Billyo

Thank you for your reply and information.

Some of these camellias are 20 years old and washing leaves in not a runner. I have sprayed the plants twice this year with MALATHINE.

I have taken some photographs of the front and back of leaves. The "mould" on the front of the leaves is very black but the residue on the back of the leaves is white! I will try and sent the photos-am I able?-shin ceist eile.

Is there any mould cleaner available in the shops that I could mix with water and spray on the infected plants?

Soap and water sprayed onto the leaves with a knapsack sprayer (cleaned, no chemicals) using the agressive spray setting on the sprayer if any. Leave this for an hour or so then repeat again and again on hourly marks until blackness is removed to your satisfaction.
Gpi is right on the honeydew and that looks to be coming from the scale insect visable in the 2nd pic. To kill on a small scale use Doff Greenfly and Blackfly Killer handgun or on a larger scale use Hygeia Greenfly Spray. Or visit your garden centre and ask for the scale insect spray they carry
