I was given a present of a Bromeliad a few months ago and it looks a bit dismal. The flower has not opened and the colour has remained dull faded red/brown. It hasn't changed in any way, you'd think it was artificial! Any tips?

Was it in on the way out of bloom when you recieved it? I know they are usually sold in bloom. And as far as I know Bromeliads do not re-bloom, but they will produce a small plant at their base, which can bloom.
What kind of location, watering did you give it toreilly?

Thanks birdie. I don't think its past its prime. I have it in a south facing room but not in direct sunlight. I water it every two weeks. I'm not sure if I should feed it. I gave it baby bio last weekend. I'll keep an eye out for baby plants.

Sounds right.

Not allowing it to dry out but not swimming in water, again sounds right.

No real need to feed it. but that little bit of baby bio should be ok.

If all else fails you could try this method that I found on the university of Florida website A simple method that a home gardener can use to start bromeliads' flowering is to place a healthy, mature bromeliad with all the water drained from its cup inside a tightly closed, clear plastic bag for a week to 10 days with a ripe apple. During aging the apple releases ethylene gas that, in turn, induces the bromeliad to flower.

Thanks Blackbird. I think I'll try the fruit idea. It would be interesting to see if that works.
