Just thought I'd give a quick update at the start of the growing season.

Last season my newly planted hedge grew very well but it seemed to grow skywards instead of sideways. Last year the supplier of the plants told me not to be scared of pruning as this is what encourages branching and thickening in a hedge. I bit the bullet and, possibly quite rashly, cut all plant tops to a level 14" back in February when the plants were dormant. So far my rashness seems to have paid off as all the plants that were heavily pruned are sprouting nodes and shoots all over the place and showing signs of responding very well to the harsh treatment.

At the same time I replaced the dead plants with spares I had left over from last year. I have probably lost just 2-3% of plants so far which is apparently very good for a bareroot hedge planted late in the season last year. I'm expecting to lose a few more this year but hopefully things should stabalise soon. The newly transplanted plants are going well too.

Later in the year I'll post a few more pictures of this seasons growth as so early in the season there really isn't much to see.
