No it isn't! It's Alder, Alnus glutinosa. Likes to have its feet in water, can be coppiced, and makes bad firewood, though good charcoal.

Oops! I stand corrected - should have known from the bark, whatever about the soggy looking location.

Alder turns a distinctive orange within a day or two of being cut.

Although it burns poorly, alder is a very useful timber when used in situations where the wood will be exposed to prolonged damp. It was frequently used to shore up the banks of watercourses; turned, it was used for bowls for settling cream prior to making butter and for numerous household/kitchen functions. Jack and Jill's pail was probably made from alder.

What on earth do you want one of those things for? The only use I know of for it is Dutch clogs and you'd need coal to burn it.

According to Wikipedia poplar has had many uses through the ages and continues to be valuable. Besides, think of all those roads graced by rows of poplar in Normandy!

I have a reply similar to blowin but deleted it, I would not have it either too tall and spindly to act as proper wind break, can surface root and liable to break from high up in tree and not suitable for maritime conditions. Looks great in photos but thats about it.
