I took a walk around the garden today, in the sunshine. Witchazel, snowdrops, crocus, hellebores were all flowering, or starting to. I thought the witchazel made a lovely blaze of colour and cut some stems for the kitchen. It's nice being able to cut flowers in February!

I had a couple of crocus flowering two weeks ago. Then they thought better of it, when the cold snap started. A few are showing colour but they will do nothing unless they get some sun.

We have snowdrops (everywhere), hellebore and a few primroses. I bought some Anemone sylvestris from the Garden Show at Antrim Castle and today I saw that they have made it through the winter - tiny green shoots, yippee.

I was there too! I splashed out on some meconopsis and I'll have to check on them in the morning. I loved the Boyne Valley Garden Centre stand and I splashed out on something there, too, but for the life of me I can't remember what. It was a good show.

I bought meconopsis too (and primula, lillies and some amazing auricula) I thought the plant stalls were fabulous, but I was disappointed with the 'show gardens' - too few and very amateur.

Now that you mention it - I ignored the gardens, other than one which seemed to have been done by children and was a bit of fun.

Meconopsis can be difficult to propogate from seed (Well i find it difficult) I think it needs to be stuck in a freezer for a couple of days and even then it needs a year to germinate, I hope ive cracked it this year as have a few seedlings growing, hope they dont get fungus, i think some of them are sterile and need to be propogated by division, I saw a lovely one once Meconopsis "Slieve Donard" which i believe seeds freely.

I had it about twenty five years ago. It didn't self seed for me, unfortunately and I failed to propagate it, so it disappeared eventually.

I spotted this beautiful little iris today among a group of pots I planted up in the autumn. I had them sitting out of the way but now this one is by the front door. Some little alliums are planted with it. Hopefully, from now on I'll have a procession of potted bulbs in flower with which to ring the changes.

My sister gave me some blue iris for Christmas. They started flowering last week. It is a lovely, hopeful sign isn't it?
