Hello there

I am looking for different tips on how to improve the structure of heavy macamore soils. I suppose adding mushroom compost could be one but maybe someone has got experience with different methods and could share their knowledge

thanks

I had a friend in Wexford with this soil. He basically added to the soil all the material that is found in the more free draining soils around the country. Things like the mushroom compost you mentioned, plus rotted manure, gravel and stone chips of all sorts. I think he limed it as well.
There was a post on poor drining soil recently, Advice on lawn currently in bad, wet condition?

My sympathy to you, Pannaannap! We have moved to Wexford recently and were very afraid we were on Macamore soil too, but we think now we probably aren't as we're high up on a hill. All I hear from everyone around is that you have to raise your beds to improve the drainage. I visited Kilmurry nursery last year, which is on really heavy macamore soil (just north of Gorey) and they have a flourishing boundary hedge, with large trees in it that they started as whips 7 years ago.....all planted on an earth bank.
So I'd say, lift your planting wherever you can and find cheap or free sources of manure and organic material...and of course all your own compost too...maybe sand and grit too. Good luck.
