|
|
I woke up on Saturday morning to find that my greenhouse had been completely destroyed in the wind. Nearly every pane of glass is smashed and the frame itself is buckled. It's a complete write off.
My question is where do I find someone who will dismantle it, take away all the broken glass and supply and erect a new one? I live in Greystones, Co. Wicklow.
Regards,
Ray. |

Ouch...I really feel for you and would not wish that on my worst Enemy...If the Frame was Aluminium any Scrap Dealer would gladly remove it for you...as for the Glass you will have to collect that up yourself and perhaps your local Bottle Bank will take it from you {or may not...I'm not sure about Panes}.
Did you ever consider a Polytunnel ...costs a lot less and easier to replace/repair...just my Tuppence worth...either way I hope you solve your problem soon... |

Window glass and bottle glass are chemically different, so don't mix them. |

Well that has me put in my place. I have brought ALL broken glass to the recycling banks for years. _________________ “It’s my field. It’s my child. I nursed it. I nourished it. I saw to its every want. I dug the rocks out of it with my bare hands and I made a living thing of it!”

It depends on what the recycler uses it for. If it is crushed and used for road metal, I don't suppose it makes any difference if it is mixed but if it is to be melted to make new glassware, the precise ratios of silica and flux and the properties of the fluxes themselves become critical. |

I presumed the end receivers have some method of sorting out the wheat from the chaff. Thought it was all melted down again anyway and allowances made for eejits like me. _________________ “It’s my field. It’s my child. I nursed it. I nourished it. I saw to its every want. What is road metal anyway? Has me intrigued. _________________ “It’s my field. It’s my child. I nursed it. I nourished it. I saw to its every want. I dug the rocks out of it with my bare hands and I made a living thing of it!”

It's the term my dad (civil engineer) used to describe the stone used for surfacing a road. He designed lots of roads in his time. |

The vast bulk of bottle glass on this island is reused (closed loop) for more glass bottles. Most of it being processed at Quinn's plant in Fermanagh- althouh it is no longer his. The addition of flat glass to bottle glass actually reduces the value of the cullet (crushed glass ready for processing). It is much more common in countries like Spain to lump all glass together and use it for roadmaking/repairing. The problem with this use is that the glass is only recycled once, wheras the closed loop system allows for the glass to be recycled effectively indefinitely. Some of the molecules in your bottle of Bud may have touched the lips of George the Second, or C. S. Parnell or Hitler. I checked (for the OP) and flat glass can be recycled at the recycling centre in Bray (or so I was informed by Wicklow County Council).
By the way, did my shoehorning of Hitler into this demonstrate Godwin's Law on this site for the first time?? |
