Hi
is it best to thin carrots on a windy day or a calm day as different books say the exact opposite of each other.
Both could make sense perhaps
calm = smell does not spread and attract root flies from another garden
Windy = smell is spread far from the carrots quickly and flies do not know it is coming from ????
What do you think
Regards

My tried and tested method.........
To prevent attracting carrot root fly by scent, you should thin on a calm evening and try to avoid crushing any carrot foliage whilst doing so. There is no use in lifting thinnings for transplanting as they will just produce malformed roots. Remove the thinnings from site and water the crop well afterwards.
I have a whole section on carrots here...... http://www.allotments.ie/?p=1000
I should also add that I plunge the thinnings into tub of water as i thin. That helps keep the scent down also. _________________ Gardening books.

Are these pests really a problem at this time of year? _________________ “It’s my field. It’s my child. I nursed it. I nourished it. I saw to its every want. I dug the rocks out of it with my bare hands and I made a living thing of it!”

Ahhhh sure I wouldn't know. Thought it was a current question. I still have carrots out in the drills, picking them as I need them. _________________ “It’s my field. It’s my child. I nursed it.
