One of the best items I ever bought, with a range of applications, was the Readers Digest book 'Food from your Garden' which contains all the usual gardening advice plus storage tips, recipes etc, i.e. pretty much all you need and bound to contain hints and tips that will be new.
It was published in 1977 (before ISBNs) and is now very much out of print BUT one can always find copies in good condition on Amazon Books at reasonable prices.
If you don't find anything else, this might be the answer. _________________ A novice gardener on newly cultivated, stoney ground. |

I don't see garden shredder on that list, It is my No. 1 most used, most useful, favourite.... (well, after a fork and a spade).
I wasn't thinking in that price range when you said "Christmas present".
One thing we don't have yet is a heated propagation mat, but I think that could be a useful gift.
I would be happy with old garden books! |

That is that sorted then. I was actually thinking of getting one myself this week as the veg tops are bulking up the compost bins. I know I should be cutting them up but I cannot be arsed! _________________ “It’s my field. It’s my child. I nursed it. I nourished it. I saw to its every want. Just bought myself a shredder from Aldi. 2500 watts, takes a 40mm branch. Was €160 now €70, get on it quick. Going to put it together now, that garden wont know itself it will be soooo tidy, piles of stuff to be got rid of all over the place. _________________ “It’s my field. It’s my child. I nursed it. It'll be interesting to see what you think of it in a month's time. I brought one (a Ryobi) over with me when I came over here in 2007. It works very well and produces very usable 'granules' for digging into the soil or whatever BUT the input slot is so restricted that to put a reasonable pile of material through it takes the proverbial 'all day'.
I used mine a couple of times but then consigned it to the back of the shed where it's probably now home to a million spiders. _________________ A novice gardener on newly cultivated, stoney ground. |

Within 5 minutes of using it I had it jammed solid. Such a job to take it apart to free it up. At least now I know it's limitations. _________________ “It’s my field. It’s my child. I nursed it. I know just what you mean. I bought a shredder in Lidl a good few years ago. It worked ok but I found feeding it tedious and noisy. It jammed a couple of years ago and I haven't cleared it yet - says it all! Now I just chuck stuff like that under some trees at the side of the garden where it now makes a 'bug megapolis'.
Having said that, the industrial-grade shredder I saw a tree surgeon use was a brilliant yoke, but not for the likes of me! |
