So many pretty textures and colours especially from the veg, and the sweet peas of course. Now if we could just smell them......

Quick question, is the silver leaved plant in the second pic known as wormwood? I seeem to remember seeing something like it in a local garden centre.

The grey plant is Escholtzia Californica (Californian Poppy..State flower) and the last plant is Brocolli..very up close and personal!!

What is the grey leaved plant in the third photo ? (not the Californian poppy)
Your photos are really lovely, and very encouraging to those of us in Ireland as we still have a month or two to wait before we have flowers as wonderful as yours.

The grey is Salvia Argentea

It is sending out some very large flower spikes at the moment and I will post a picture of that soon..groiws almost as big as a Verbascum which I have too.

Thanks for the information, I shall look up that Salvia in one of my books. It looks as if it needs plenty of sun! What an amazingly varied family the salvias are. All your flowers look so well tended and cherished! When does everything start flowering in your climate? Do plants keep flowering through your winter? It all looks heavenly!

I love Salvias too and have about twenty varieties at this stage. A friend used to grow them and is about to give me his seed collection. They can be trick to grown from seed but easy peasey to grow from cuttings.

This is Southern California and our winters can be like a moderatley hot Irish summer. Here in LA we get a few nights of light frost so I grow a Spring garden in winter here..the greens, peas, cool weather crops etc and have the Northern hemisphere summer in Spring. (temps of 70-80) when summer rolls around here it is over 100 degrees and forget about gardening in July /August!! Now is our peak just as the weather is about to get hot and stay hot.

Gracious, how different to our seasons here...as you must know all too well if you come from Galway. Does that mean your "spring garden" plants all die in the heat of July/August ? Do you start from scratch every winter? When do deciduous (sheds and renews leaves annually) trees and shrubs lose their leaves? I can't quite imagine how your seasons work as far as gardening goes. We are so used to nature going to sleep, as it were, over the winter that it's hard to imagine a different reality. Mind you, our winters have shortened dramatically compared to even 15 years ago.
Keep taking photos, they are really good...and inspirational. Sive
