|
Hi there, found this in the hedge of an old abandoned house and garden, very overgrown and flowering profusely. I guess it's some sort of a cherry or crab, anyone know for definite? Flowers are more red than pink, the camera kind of bleached them out a bit.
Also do you reckon I could propagate by cutting?
Thanks

Simple layering will work, you might find a branch that has layered naturally. Otherwise, softwood cuttings in summer.

The autumn fruits are edible when cooked. Very sour though, so lots of sugar needed.

Thanks for that. Don't think I'll be able to layer it as it's on someone else's property. I see them on the future forest website for €4..might be a simpler solution!

Go for it!
As my quince is flowering profusely this year, for the first time (it must be planted eight or ten years and has been left to itself most of the time) I may get loads of fruit. There are lots of recipes for quince jelly on the web, also for quince cheese. I think I'll give it a go, when they are ripe and I'll keep you posted as to the results.

Be careful I think the flower you showed was the ornamental quince. They do have fruit but horrible, they have pink blossom.
I had the quince which is about the the same size as a pear and looks like one but hairy. That has a white blossom and will grow into a full size tree if you let it. I had both when I lived in UK but the larger one got rust and I had to cut it back and never got fruit off of it again.

Looks like quince to me, chaenomeles japonica as Greengage said. I bought seeds of this and they are currently germinating happily. Supposed to be the one plant that goats won't touch.... I don't have a goat, a friend does, hence why I don't have one. I like the plant tho
