Growing peanuts (indoors) would be great fun and educational for children. |

neighbour grew them, dont think they were water melons, but melons, had to support them with netting, some years they were ok, small though i think, green house rather than polytunnel, he didnt heat it up, maybe better results if he did in october. no nothing about peanuts except yum yum |

I grew melons last year in the polytunnel which are similar to watermelons. They are very like cucumbers in that they like it warm and humid so the polytunnel is good for them. The major difference I found is that you have to pollinate them, there is a male and female flower. The male flowers appear first and the females follow. I was pollinating them after work and nothing was happening and then I found out that you should pollinate them at midday or thereabouts as the chance of pollination is better (unless there are enough bees to do the job). Got about 10-12 small melons from Emir and Sweetheart variety. Had another called Outdoor Wonder which had great growth but no fruit. Have 3 varieties this year - Sweetheart, Emir and Lunabel in the polytunnel so hoping for good things this year now that I have the pollination thing sorted. |
