Best Presarvative for Post and rail fencing

Hey guys,

Looking for advice as to what to paint the timber post and rail to preserve it. Im thinking cresote or is this used anymore?

Cresote is a good preservative jollyman. But I doubt you will be able to find it any more due to a possible cancer risk. From 1 May 2003 creosote is no longer be available to DIY users and any spare DIY creosote should have been used up by 30 June 2003. After this date it may then only be used for industrial applications by professional users such as to treat telegraph and electricity poles. Of course you may still find some available tucked at the back of a rural hardware store. Wink

There are loads of "fencelife" style product out there and to be quite honest its hard to tell how effective they are. Some to me seem little more than wood stain. Maybe some other posters will let us know which they found effective and which were about as effective as water.
I know the area most prone to rotting is the bottom section of the stakes which is the end that goes in the ground. A traditional method used to preserve this is to char or over an open fire. Today I suppose you could use a gas blowtorch. The burnt outer coating prevents the onset of rot.

Well all the fence is pre treated, but it appears it is washing off alreay! Have seen plenty of these products but they seem to be little more than paint for astethics more than any other reason!
With the creosote you can tell that it is doing a job plus i have been told horse wont chew on fences with creosote.

Cuprinol Green wood preserver is as close as you will creosote in my opinion. Not cheap, but then what is. The bottom section of the stakes that goes in the ground (2ft?) should be left sitting in the Cuprinol for at least 24hrs, then give all the above ground wood about 2 coats. Its green in colour so you may have to cover with a brown stain if you want the wood to still resemble wood.

I used a product called protecta fence seems the business i was looking for a black wood stain/Preservative and i had three 5 litre drums of the ronseal fence life at the counter with me, an old man behind the desk said what color are you looking for i said black and he said he had just the stuff out around the back to follow him a 15litre drum of protecta fence €37 was a great oil based paint to work with have only one side painted yet will tackle the other side next weekend.
