I've made the raised beds and I've treated the outside of the planks with fence paint Should I line the insides with fabric or just leave them be. The planks are 2.5 inches thick. I will line the bottom.
Thanks in advance,
Regards,
Ray. |

I don't think there is any need to line the inside of the planks; I don't think it would achieve anything. The lining of the bottom seems to be a matter of debate on this forum and others. Some members say no, others yes; the latter dispute over fabric, cardboard or other materials.
I think the bottom should be lined with weedproof fabric. It costs about €1 per square metre. I would recommend extending this beyond the boundary of the planks to make it easier to weed around the outside of the bed.
For example, if your raised bed is 2m x 1.2m (external dimensions), I would recommed using 2.2m x 1.4m of fabric.
I suspect some debate/discussion may continue...

I think the bottom should be lined with weedproof fabric. It costs about €1 per square metre. I would recommend extending this beyond the boundary of the planks by about 10cm, to make it easier to weed around the outside of the bed.
For example, if your raised bed is 2m x 1.2m, I would recommed using 2.1m x 1.3m of fabric.

Many thanks for your reply. I'm thinking the same about the sides. I guess I needed someone to confirm my own thoughts. Thanks for the tip about extending the fabric to beyond the bed itself. I hadn't thought of that.
Thanks again,
Ray. |

I think your maths come under scrutiny here my potatoes, should it not be 2.33m x 1.53m of fabric/breathable roofing felt? Scaffold boards are 65mm thick plus the 100mm twice makes 165mm beyond the inside face of the raised bed. Either way the raised bed is either 2.42m x 1.38m or 2.55m x 1.25m if whole length planks have been used, which would make the fabric 2.62 x 1.58m or 2.75m x 1.45m.
PS. I know you were only giving an example. _________________ “It’s my field. It’s my child. I nursed it. I nourished it. I saw to its every want. I dug the rocks out of it with my bare hands and I made a living thing of it!”

So that's a plus for it. |
This is a very good point. |

I think your maths STILL come under scrutiny my potatoes!!! That only leaves 50mm outside the timber.
Don't mind me though, numbers are my thing I'm afraid. My better half swears that I have Aspergers Syndrome which essentially means that most things to me are either right or wrong - there is no grey area. Basically I am just a pedantic twit. _________________ “It’s my field. It’s my child. I nursed it. I nourished it. I saw to its every want.
