Hi,
My name is Rosaleen and I'm a new member to Irish Gardners. I am the proud owner of a new polytunnel and would like some advice on layout, plant placement etc. I am not a very experienced gardner but am not a total beginner either. All or any advice/guidance will be gratefully accepted.
Looking forward to some reaction. |

Hi Roseleen.
Welcome to Irish Gardeners.
Good to hear you got your hands on a poly tunnel.
Have a look at this topic for some information on the subject of growing under glass or plastic....... http://www.gardenplansireland.com/forum/about103.html
Hopefully the polytunnel is oriented to face east/west in order to capture the greatest amount of sunshine during the winter months.
This also helps if the prevailing wind blows principally from the south, if your tunnel door opens to the east you will avoid shocking your plants with cold air every time you enter.
Plants in the polytunnel are completely at your mercy when it comes to water.
It is a good idea to set up a water butt or two to supply you with life preserving rain water.
Good luck with your tunnel. _________________ If you benefited from irishgardeners.com, please link to us or tell others, so that the site can grow and benefit more gardeners.

Enjoy your polytunnel. We got ours a year ago and its been the most wonderful investment, already we have saved the cost of the tunnel against the organic veg we would normally buy in the market.
Crop placement - To avoid shading of smaller plants put the taller ones at the western and northen edges of the tunnel.
Crop rotation : It doesn't matter so much what you plant where the first year, but keep a little sketch, or a video clip on your camera, of what you grow where in your tunnel each year, then the following season you can glance back and decide what you should grow where next time.
Its worth getting a good book on gardening eg Gardening Under Plastic, or Four Season Harvest _________________ Living the good life on our rural Irish smallholding. Follow the learning curve on our interactive blogsite at www.sallygardens.typepad.com |
