Looks like your living in an upland area so was thinking something to blend in.
Mallow, Viburnum, Forsythia |

It may be a silly question, but with a view like that, why are you so intent on blocking it ? |

Exactly. You need nothing. Plus, with Cupressus that big, you'll have great difficulty growing anything in that space. The roots will reach the gate, trust me. I suggested gooseberry, because with very high maintenance (lots of feeding, mulching, water), you might get a bush that wouldn't be bigger than the wall and you'd get a crop.
Otherwise, you'll have to look to the woodland, the moor and the city. What grows well in partial shade, heavy competition, and poor soil? Holly. Silver King is good. Hollies are gender confused. "Kings" are female, and you'll get berries for xmas. Queens, are male, and you'll just get foliage. Buddleia. for flower and butterflies. Juniperus communis "Hibernica" (boring, IMO, but at least you can use the berries). Elder. Sambucus nigra porphyrophylla, will give you black/purple leaves and purple flowers. |

I was thinking Hydrangea myself or a thorn-less rose Greengage, well I wouldn't be so much blocking off the view but rather filling in a gap Sive, I already have a few Gooseberry bushes planted so I wouldn't want to put another one there, a holly with berries would be nice too i must say, i think i'll prob get a Hydrangea and put in a few daffodils for the spring too around it |
