I was looking at some for a quick screen. They are only four feet high now. I looked at some sites that say they are short lived and prone to disease. What are they like in Ireland? |

Leyland Cypress. | yes that's it.
Is there something wrong with this site? It keeps going to a go daddy page. I managed to get here now via a proxy server. Has anyone else had problems? |

Leyland Cypress in Ireland
I was looking at some Leyland Cypress for a quick screen. They are only four feet high now. I looked at some sites that say they are short lived and prone to disease. What are they like in Ireland?
Since starting the thread i did a few searches. They seem to have lots of problems with shallow roots which cannot hold the tree in place when it grows very high/fast. But I find it hard to believe they are as bad as some say |

Leylandii are perfect for a quick screen, you just have to watch they don't get out of control!
They have a bad reputation, but they have to get very large before shallow roots become a problem. Also if its a screen you want, just decide how tall you want your screen, and then just prune accordingly!
They are a bit bland, so why not grow a few honeysuckle through them to add flowers!
Enjoy! |

I got rid of mine a few years ago and persuaded my neighbour to get rid of those on our shared boundary. We went halves on fencing. They gave me great shelter from the NW winds but were too hard to keep under control. At 12 or 15 feet, and on top of a steep bank, maintenance ended up costing me. Now I've got my view back and the sunsets and I'm growing stuff against my 8 foot fence in a border that is about 6 feet wider. As for the lack of shelter, wind keeps midges away!
If you are going to grow them, don't let them get higher than head height or wider than a metre or so.
They are naturally big trees and they do grow fast - there is a group of beautiful specimens at Kew. They are about 90 or 100 feet high! |
