Don't be lazy: that wedge method is for doing a whole pile of willow or hawthorn or similar. You only have seven holes to dig. | two feet apart you reckon?

Nope. two feet six inches (in old money)

No, it's just the fact that you only 7 holes to dig, so you can dig a nice sized hole, mix in plenty of compost, autumn leaves, a little bit of sand and maybe slow release shrub fertilizer and you'll give your Berberis a better start in life. You have to "feel" for your plants. Maybe "empathy" is a better word. _________________ .

I would plant them 18 inches apart myself
You could dig a trtench and loosen up the bottom and add some well rotted organic material, make sure you firm them in well by using a big boot.
If its only 15 feet weeds should not be a problem.
The wedge method works well if you are planting forestry material and you need to get it done quick and not mind about losses.
I also agree you need to fel the soil and smelll it thats real life there.
The Soil's Tears
The soil knows the burden of tears
The earth's sadness that it bears
Through endless battles for territory -
Only the soil knows it has no boundary!
Blood spills on it, falls toil's sweat,
Muscle's ravage decides the weak's fate
Cries of desperation and victory's cheers
All these the soil tearfully bears!
