Hi there
I am planning to grow a deciduous 100x100m wood in peat bog.
The stuff you can cut turf in.
It's in a relatively protected area- a bit windy though.
It's not waterlogged- you can walk on it with shoes...
Any ideas on species suitable?
I am thinking
Alder
Roam
Horn Beam
Any other ones you know that do ok in peat bogs?
Thanks

Is this for recreational use or for future firewood?
I would add Downy Birch it does better in Peat than silver birch, Oak , Red Oak, and even Sweet cheshnut I find does really well also Beech.
My land is cut over bog halfway up a mountain and really exposed and wet so have been experimenting since 2006, and find that alder and birch are the best and are great to shelter the others while they are settling in, I have lots of lodgepole pines that have seeded into my plot from some forestry next door and grow really quickly and a shelter belt of these would help the other trees and could be removed later. last year i got a few scots pine and they romped away with between 9 and 18 inches growth , really impressive for the first season so i will get more of them.
Good luck, its great to hear more people planting trees. |

Thanks MountainyMan. It's for personal recreational use- if I can ever get any of the family to be interested in it- apart from the nephew...
Yes, trees are great things indeed. but then I don't think I need to convince you of that! |
