I dug up my rhubarb last weekend, it was planted too close together. Now I a thinkling about re-planting it and wonder is it best to be planted in raised beds or in open ground.

I had it orginally planted in open ground but found it difficult to keep the weeds and grass away from it, if planted in open ground should it be mulched around?

I would be grateful for the other members thoughts.

It just so happens that im in from the rain doing the very same thing.
I am planting mine in open ground Once the ground is cleared of any scutch or perennial weeds it will be ok, SInce rhubarb has large leaves it will smother out any annual weeds.
You can then give it a very thick mulch of FYM or leaf mold which will also suppress weeds. If its on a raised bed it could dry out and whats to stop weeds growing on a raised bed such as scutch, Cleevers, bindweed, ground elder etc transportd by birds, wind or some seed in the mulch that you brought in accidently.
As a matter of intrest im also leaving mine out of the ground for a week to allow frost at it Why? I dont know thats what we always did bit like the granny and she cooking bacon in two saucepans...... When asked why she said she never had a saucepan big enough to take a full ham.
