Thanks for that Greengage, I couldn't identify it from the wildlife book I have.
Also couldn't identify a flying insect I saw today......really big, about the length of my thumb, kind of like a dragonfly, but with this lethal looking long spike sticking out of its end. It flew away before I could take a photograph...but it was quite scarey-looking.
Any ideas ? |

Sounds like your describing a wood wasp, noisy in flight bit scary but harmless |

Thank you so much Mountainy Man, I've just googled that and it's exactly what it was. It flew in through an open door and thankfully flew straight out again. It probably wouldn't have looked/sounded quite so frightening outdoors. |

Used to work in a company in Leitrem where they used a lot of woodchip, Jeeze, When I first encountered these buggers they reminded me of jurassic park. they were bloody Huge! I"m willing to accept their harmless, but, with a sword sticking out of their bum one to two inches long, I was quite happy to provide no hinderince to their flight path, with all due respect to the experts. |
