When I saw this for the first time I assumed that the person knew the name and was testing our knowledge so I tried to puzzle it out and have not reached a definite conclusion yet, I would have jumped at Viburnum straight away and then Cotoneaster was mentioned, but this genus does not have a perfume. Then I thought it might be Stransvaesia , fulfills the points but does not have a perfume. Cotoneaster is a huge genus and hard to track down individual species. I would like to know the real name of this puzzler.

Apologies folks. I had a head start on this when it appeared on another forum under the heading Evergreen Whitebeam.
Quote. honeybunny...
"a friend believes a roughly 9ft x 8ft tree/bush she has in her garden is a whitebeam (sorbus aria) she says the leaves, flowers and berries look identical...only her one isn't deciduous...its evergreen!!! is there an evergreen whitebream out there or does she have something else completely...and if so what trees look very similar? thanks in advance as any help would be much appreciated :) , "

My reply was....
Sorbus aria is easy to id as the underside of the leaves look white.
Quote link below from Kew...
"Despite having a green top side, the leaves of Sorbus aria have hundreds of tiny white hairs on the underside that give them a silvery white look. So, when the wind blows through the leaves, the foliage effectively changes colour from green to white and back again."

As you say it is not evergreen.

Without pics it becomes a guessing game.
So a suggestion.... Cotoneaster sp.
These can be evergreen, some are trees, they have clusters of white flowers followed by berries.
A pic would really help.

Honeybunny. reply...........
"okey dokey here are a few pics she's just sent me, first time i've seen pics of it myself...its definitely not a sorbus aria, im thinkin' a viburnum or some sort? any help would be great guys :) "

its from a friends garden in England...Surrey
she says it was there when she moved in two years ago and was really huge! she cut it hard back the first year but its very fast growing and sends out long arching branches that she's forever having to prune, she cant imagine how big it'd get if left to grow unchecked |
