I have been looking for an allotment in my local area(north Tipp) for ages. This year I really looked and began to despair as I had no luck, however as luck would have it there was a co-op allotment that I eventually looked into, 10 minutes from my door, and it turned out to be what I was looking for.
What put me off was the word Co-op. Initially I associated it with another local co_op which is a co_op in every sense of the word. Everyone chips in and everyone get equal reward. However I wanted plot of my own and eventually found it.
My background in vegetables etc is that my father used to grow about a acre of Veg and potatoes in a field beside our house. I used to weed it weekly as a young lad however I remember sowing everything and looking at my own kids it was an edcuation I want them to know about. We used organic manure from our uncles farm which was literally a mix of cow poo, straw and the remains of their hay feed. He still does at home but in smaller quantities as we all moved away. While my home house in over an hour away it was not ideal however he is growing my potatoes for me in a few drills for me and the rest for him.
So this year in anticipation of finding an allotment I started growing seedlings in large trays on the pretext that I would not find an allotment and I could grow a very small amount in the trays to full term however if I found an allotment I could transplant them when the time was right.
That day is tomorrow. My father, uncle and me are starting on the allotment tomorrow with the intention to turn it(all manually of course).Set in some manure set up drills and plant what we have. Its on the large side of 5m x 10m
we intend on transplanting peas, sprouts, brocoilli, cauliflower and onions(possibly), strawberries and planting in cabbage plants that i got today.
pictures to follow on this thread.
How is everyones elses allotment going. I know there is bad growth at the moment. |

Good luck with the allotment Gerry, it must be very exciting getting started with a new plot....and of course the best part is seeing what does well for other people and exchanging advice and experience. |

Congratulations on all you have done. And your brocolli will be fine. Don't forget to put up some pics of your plot when you get time. And happy gardening.
