Cornus kousa is relatively low growing, while Cornus kousa "chinensis" is more vigorous. Cornus florida is not too vigorous. Avoid C. nutalli, and C. contreversa. |

NO i could leave it a that but it would be cheeky
i have a Cornus capitata "Eddies White Wonder" and it flowered for the first time two years ago after eight years there is one called Cornus kousa var. chinensis. which is said to be more reliable and flowers from an early age where would you get one mmmmmmm Rentes, flip schram or maybe Mount venus nurseries if you are irish that is...
Flowering dogwoods like a moisture retentive soil, as they have large leaves which can lose water rapidly in the summer. The attractive parts of the flower head are actually bracts which resemble petals and surround the tiny true flowers in the centre. These are white in the species, but there are now many pink cultivars too. Since they are bracts not flowers, they last longer, often starting green and star like before expanding to a more rounded shape as the true flower opens. I saw a nice one in the NBG down near the wisteria stand at the lake. |
