Hi all,
This is my third year growing garlic and I'd like some guidance. I planted garlic cloves from a reputable source just over a month ago. About 20% of them are up very strongly and most of the rest haven't budged. They are planted in well manured (not fresh!) soil in a raised bed and are approx 2 inches deep. I've carefully inspected some of the "dormant" cloves and they look fine. Am I impatient or should I cut my losses and replace the laggards? If I leave them, will they kick on in the spring? So many questions...
Garlic crop this year (for me anyway) was somewhat disappointing and I'm claiming weather as the root cause. Very anxious to have an improvement next year.
Any guidance welcome! Trowel poised to go into operation at the weekend! |

Similar happened to me in years past.
Many garlic cloves like most bulbs require a dose of cold weather to spark a growth spurt once milder conditions return.
The weather has been really mild so far, so I would wait and allow them some frosts first.
For the record all my laggards eventually emerged once the got a cold period. _________________ Gardening books.

Would love to give garlic a go and was wondering about where to get sets or cloves to grow as I don,t see any in the gardening centres and I don,t think the supermarket garlic would work or would it ?. So what about the garlic you would find in the market in Galway on saturday would that be ok, any ideas.

if you're in dublin, mr. middleton have garlic for sale; i think i paid €3.99 for three bulbs.
the garlic you'd buy in the supermarket is generally soft neck garlic, but hard neck garlic is better suited to our climate. |

For the record over the past few years I have grown soft neck garlic from bulbs bought in the veg section of my local shop. |
