I have tryed Butternut squash for the first time this year, I grew them inside,(Tunnel) and outside, In the tunnel I have tomatoes, sweet peppers, chilli peppers and cucumbers, and all have given a bumper crop. The Butternut however formed a fruit and then rotted, and, the very same thing happened to the butternut outside! A bit dejected on this one as I love Butternut soup, any help please. |

Purely remembering a similar thread some time back, Michael Brennock advised an enquirer to put Butternut squash fruits on upturned flower pots to keep them off the ground where they rot. _________________ A novice gardener on newly cultivated, stoney ground. |

Thanks blowin, these are rotting from the base outwards when their the size of a plum, even when I lift them from the soil, weather? humidity? wrong seed for Irish summer? SUMMER! Ha! Ha! Seed was Hunter F1. I grew excellent pumkins last year and am assuming their from the same family, Has me stumped, If everything I grew ended up like this I"d end up in a home for the bewildered! |

Last year, which was my first year growing anything, I was really sucessful growing butternut squash outside. This year has been a disaster. I had the plants in the greenhouse until the start of May before putting them outside. By this stage they already had small fruit on them. However, the fruit stopped growing as soon as they were planted outside and the plants have produced nothing.
I have been blaming the weather, the lack of both sun and heat. |

I saved seed from one of last year's squashes and have produced literally dozens of seedlings, planted directly into the soil outside, BUT, like you, no fruit yet and infact not even a flower.
Otherwise, perfectly healthy and running everywhere so I'm still lioving in hope. _________________ A novice gardener on newly cultivated, stoney ground. |

Sorry to hear your trouble with them tunnelsfullofhens. Like you, I had a bumper crop last year. This year, I started them off in pots alongside winter squash and I ended up giving away lots of plants. Unfortunately(luckily maybe!) I gave my butternut plants away instead of the winter squash but the winter squash are flying along. Must check with my friend if their butternut plants produced much. Might be the disaster of the summer to blame. |
