Trying to pick ripe plums whilst surrounded by hordes of angry wasps started me thinking about deterrents. I happened to have some cheap-and-cheerful citronella-based garden incence sticks -- supposed to deter flying insects -- and wondered whether they might have some effect.
Well, whilst they didn't smell of lemon, they certainly routed most of the wasps. About fifteen minutes after lighting one, only the die-hards were left !
I don't know whether it was the smell or the smoke ... but something sent those pesky wasps elsewhere.
For anyone else who might want to give this a try, the sticks I used have a burning length of about 15-18 inches and burned for approximately 2 hours. |
