I was just checking what is the difference between purchasing a rose from Aldi/Lidl and a Garden Centre in Ireland?
I was speaking to somebody that grows roses and they told me that Aldi/Lidl are secondarry roses. Is this statement correct? |

I have bought loads of roses from Aldi and they have been superb. Reason being they are half the price of garden centres. I have never found them secondry at all. |

I have purchased a few Aldi roses and they are triving now. I do not notice any difference. I was checking if other people had other opinions on these roses. |

I don't grow roses, but I do try to support my local garden centres. If they close down, you will be at the mercy of the various supermarkets etc, and they will only sell what they can make a good profit on.
Have you ever tried ordering a named variety from the likes of Lidl ? |

The majority of roses that I have bought at Aldi are named varieties. I agree if I want a specially named one I would have to go to a garden centre. Its just if I want ordinary ones I will buy them at Aldi because they are cheaper.
On saying that a month ago I went to a specialist nursery over at Clifton. Its advertised as growing plants that can stand Ireland's weather. There were roses there in the worst state I have ever seen plants. They were €9.99 each and covered in black spot and weeds. I got the same thing in Aldi for €3.25. |

I agree with you 100%. I dont normally purchase plants from Aldi or Lidl but from my local garden centres. We in Ireland should support purchasing all local produce to keep all irish businesses trading. Businesses like Aldi/Lidl are only here in Ireland to make a quick buck. I know we are living in a difficult ecomony now but we should pay the little bit extra to keep irish businesses trading. |

Sounds like you had a bad experience in that Garden Centre. |

I am not suggesting supporting Irish businesses if they are not offering good quality produce....as seems to have been the case in Clifden....... but I think we must do our best to keep any good specialist businesses going.
The large chains/multinationals will only ever sell what is mass-produced and profitable, and in gardening terms that narrows choice down enormously.
It's up to us and our wallets......we have more power than we realise. |

i can't comment about the roses, but i stopped buying any plants in aldi or lidl years ago; they're cheaper, but to take a dicentra as an example, the weight of the root they sold was probably one tenth of the one i got in mr. middleton at around twice the price. |

I have bought some plants in Aldi.Lidl and have had no problems with them. I have a Rose that I got in aldi for €1.99 that is really beautiful and have no regrets.
If I see a plant, shrub, rose that I have been looking for cheaper in Aldi/lidl, then I buy it. Example, I have been looking for a particular tamarisk for years, and Aldi had one, so I bought it, no garden centre I asked could help me.
Good and bad in both I suppose. |
