My first signs of a harvest are:-
Buds on 1st Early Potatoes just nearly opened into flowers.
Flowers on Tomatoe plant just changed to small fruits.
Centre leaves of Broccoli plants curling into heads.
Onions stalks really big now and looking like they are keeling-over.
OH, and plenty of baby lettuce and spinnach leaves for the table. |

|
|
After replacing my old vegtable garden witj a new "Square Foot" garden (12"H raised beds with soiless mix) Pay Day has now arrived.
I had flowers on a few of my first early potatoes a month ago but waited now to test the waters. Today I slid my hand down into the friable soiless mix and picked 6 beautiful spuds. The fmain foilgage is not disturbed and can grow the little spuds I left behind to a bigger size.
Those spus were accompained on the table with spinnach, and jumbo shrimp sauteed in butter, garlic and lemon balm allf rom the garden (except the shrimp of course).
I'm off fishing tomorrow to illiminate the execption! |

From the polytunnel we had for dinner yesterday, peas, broccoli, and strawberry's for pudding. Of interest the onions, all salad stuff, leeks, runner beans, broad beans and climbing beans are doing well.
This is our first full year with the tunnel and we are very pleased. (this wind is a bit frightening though) |

I had a polythene cloche/mini tunnel over the 1st 8ft x 4ft raised bed until St. Patrick's day which has the 1st early Spuds, Spinach, Lettuce, 1st Onions, etc. The other 3 beds were never covered and everything has done great in the open air.
The only problem is that the red onions in the 1st bed have bolted but I staggered the planting with more in the other beds and the white onions have not bolted wither. The beginning of February is too early to plant Onions even under plastic.
Also I planted out some Tomatoes, Peppers, Corn and Courgetts a couple of weeks ago and they are struggling with the cool nights. I kept a few Tomatoes & Peppers in the plastic LIDEL greenhouse and they are doing great, I have lots of green tomatoes already, I planted them from seed in the kitchen at the start of February. |

The tunnel is a great thing to have for the early crops! We've been eating new potatoes, carrots, spinach and salads for weeks now, still waiting on the french beans, cougettes and tomatoes. Yum! |
