Hey all. I was looking at my cabbage, broccolli and cauliflower with a view to transplanting this week..and noticed a lot of green moss/algae on the top layer of soil..what is this exactly..(i have been watering with rain water not tap water).. would it be safe to transplant to the veg plot? im worried it might take over the entire garden!! the soil is the cheap stuff from aldi/lidl!!

Hi Nozebleed, i bought the same seed compost myself and had poor results with it as well with cabbage and broccoli. they say you get what you pay for, will be using better compost from now on. Did not have any of that green stuff like you and your seedlings look ok. Wait and see what Michael Brenock says. All the best.
stonehead.

I'm not an expert but were they water logged at any stage or left in an area with no sun or warmth?
I also got this on a few pots outside from the winter but just scraped it off and it was fine. (I use John Innes compost).

the heavy watering would cause this but its not a major problem.also the compost may have been very fine so that when you water it it packs closer together not letting oxygen in and thats what it looks like to me.when you are transplanting the seedlings just scrape off as much as you can and discard to the compost heap.

I have had the green tint on my pots before and I was told that it was due to the water coming from the tap that had too much iron in the water. It has never done any of my plants or veg any harm. It seems to affect some of the pots in the greenhouse, but there is also a bit of it on my plant pots outdoors.
