when planting a semi mature tree what fertiliser would be best to use. It is a blue conifer with i think 8 years growth, would that sound right

i would not recommend any fertiliser on a conifer being transplanted. if the soil isvery poor I would recommend using home made garden compost. it is important to stake or support the tree to help it become established.

plant without adding in anything and if it needs feeding during the year then give it some liquid feed. Most important of all do not let it dry out during the first dry spell.

hi hijacker home made (as distinct from bought in)compost is that which is made at home in the garden from waste garden material and kitchen waste put in a heap and allowed to rot down over a year so that it is crumbly and friable and contains the nutrients that were originally taken up by the plants that are now rotten.

thanks guys. i think i had a mental block when i posted last night. when i read the link that banner posted and michael's information my brain switched on again....i know what home made compost is!!
having 3 children under 3 and extreme sleep deprivation i'm blaming!!
